'Bright students, tutored by experienced
and dedicated teachers in junior colleges,
should achieve a rounded development.
A robust constitution and a keen intellect
are two qualities for a productive and
worthwhile career. Given that extra strength
of character which makes for leadership,
the
verve and dynamism of our society will surge
upwards to new heights of achievement.'

National Junior College submitted one of the most number of correct entries for the newly launched National Online Crossword Challenge. A record 3318 entries were received for the contest. The Grand Prize, a hotel package consisting of Accommodation  in a Deluxe Room for 2 adults and 2 children with Breakfast, sponsored by the Sentosa Resort & Spa, was won by NJC Student Oh Jia Lin Karen of 03A03

The JC, which has a colourful history and an impressive achievement record, was established in 1969 with the aim of centralizing the two-year pre-university course with maximum utilisation of specialist personnel and resources. The academic and extra curricular programmes are organized with the specific purpose of training and nurturing a new generation of alert and independent young minds with responsible and responsive social attitudes compatible with the Singapore millieu.

In true pioneering spirit, the College launched the Integrated Programme in 2004. The IP, as it is known, is designed to equip students with the requisite knowledge and the skills and experiences that will prepare students challenges ahead. Students will undergo academic rigour in all major areas of Mathematics, the Sciences, English, the Arts, and Humanities. The intellectual development of students in the Programme will stretch beyond the traditional academic pursuit of paper qualifications. It will nurture their intellectual capacity through broader spectrum of learning experiences such as broad-based and independent learning and application based learning so that they gain a wider perspective on life and a deeper and more genuine understanding and appreciation of their environment and all things around them.

In keeping with its name and philosophy, the College claims no affiliation with any secondary school but instead draws its students from a wide spectrum. Thus each year about eighty Singapore secondary schools will have representatives amongst the College's student population, and everyone will have equal opportunities of attaining the highest levels of achievement in all fields. In addition, scholars from India, Hong Kong, Malaysia and students from Indonesia, Korea and Thailand mix with Singapore students. NJC also plays host to German, Taiwanese and Japanese students in Immersion programmes.

The College philosophy is founded on the basis that its ultimate aim is to bring out, to the fullest, each student's physical, moral and intellectual potential. Apart from emphasizing academic excellence, the College stresses integration of Singapore's cultures through celebrations of ethnic festivals. Qualities of self-discipline, social responsibility and social awareness are also inculcated through extra curricular activities. Identification with the College and the nation, the ability to put group interest before self, a positive attitude to problem solving, the stamina to see things through, a keen sense of commitment and of "serving with honour": these are the valued and expected educational outcomes of the College and contribute towards its unique spirit.
